Did you miss the eCapital Advisors webinar? Wednesday, July 25 one of our expert consultants Mike Jelen reviewed how far Oracle BI 11g has come from its release two years ago. He focused on one of the most important questions you have when considering an upgrade: how can OBI11g benefit your business?
We put a replay of the webinar up on our YouTube channel. You can watch it here. In the meantime, read through some of the commonly asked questions you may have when considering an upgrade, and Mike’s expert take:
Q: What’s new in 11g?
A: Mobile, Scorecards, better maps & Essbase integration, Fusion Middleware integration, rewrite of the UI.
Q: What happens to my customized skins, stylesheets & XML files?
A: Skins and Styles cannot be migrated using the Upgrade Assistance and will need to be redone.
Q: Can you only deploy 11g on WebLogic? Can you use other application servers?
A: The current release of 11g only supports WebLogic. Future releases are supposed to support other app servers.
Q: What happens to the hierarchies when we upgrade to 11g?
A: The metadata in the RPD will be migrated as is which would include any hierarchies.
Q: How does the RPD security model convert?
A: Users and Groups that you have in your 10g RPD file will be migrated into the Fusion Middleware component which has its own LDAP.
Q: We have modeled in Essbase ragged hierarchies. How does the upgrade handle these ragged hierarchies?
A: The metadata in the RPD will be migrated intact which would include any hierarchies. You will want to evaluate the ragged hierarchy since 11g incorporates native functionality via Hierarchical Columns that correctly handles these hierarchies without additional development.
Q: Are the graphs any better in 11g?
A: The graphing engine has been replaced with ADF DVT which allows for more customizations.
Q: Has the install changed?
A: Yes, during the install OBI will now install some BI Server ‘metadata’ into an 11.2+ database. The thought is that future releases will install more & more information into the database vs. into xml files.
Q: Has MUD (multi-user development) been improved?
A: MUD is generally the same in 11g as it was in 10g.
